About 100 people gathered today at the Flagpoles at UC Irvine to listen to members of the AFT, local activists, workers, and students explain the direct correlation between the defense of peaceful protest and the demand for a better education and, in general, to discuss the situation of our state’s economy. Despite the heavy presence of police and rooftop video surveillance this action took place peacefully and at the same time was loud and defiant as students inflated “solidarity cubes” on which they spray painted messages of solidarity with other actions happening across the world such as the labor struggle in Wisconsin and the popular uprise in norther Africa and the Middle East. Other students chalked the floor as the police kept a close watch, but this time there were no detentions. (See previous chalking detentions at UC Irvine). There are reports from other universities in California including a report on an arrest made at UC Berkeley and a Sit-In at UC Santa Cruz. Below are some images from UC Irvine.
